Who are the Bhandaris?
The Bhandari community has long been the backbone of Goan society—a people deeply rooted in the soil and sea, whose labor and helped shape the state’s agrarian and social landscape. Historically known as warriors and guardians of the land, the Bhandaris faced centuries of systemic marginalization and neglect. Yet, through resilience and an unyielding work ethic, they transitioned from traditional occupations to becoming key contributors in Goa’s modern economy, politics, and culture.
The Bhandari History Project is a dedicated initiative to document, preserve, and celebrate the rich heritage of the Bhandari community in Goa.
